8 fitness hubs for digital nomads: where to train
Some cities make you fitter just by living there. The gym is cheaper than your coffee habit, the beach has pull-up bars, and half the people you meet at coworking are on their way to a class. Other cities make every workout a logistics project.
This guide covers 8 hubs where training and nomad life genuinely fit together: a real fitness scene, coworking, livable costs, and community. All prices were checked on the operators' own websites as of September 2026, and where we could not verify something, we say so. If you are looking for the habits rather than the places, start with how to stay fit as a digital nomad. And if your sport involves a board, we made a separate guide to surf towns.

🗺️ Where the hubs are
🏋️ The 8 hubs
🇹🇭 Phuket: the most famous fitness street in the world
Soi Ta-iad in Chalong is roughly 1.5 kilometers of nothing but training. The street's own directory counts 205 businesses and more than 550 weekly classes on this single road: Muay Thai camps, strength gyms, ice baths, macro-counted meal cafes, and fight shops end to end.
The anchor is Tiger Muay Thai, which alone runs 116+ weekly classes. A drop-in class costs 500 THB (about €13), a full day pass 1,000 THB (about €26), and a month of all-inclusive training about €436 plus 7% VAT. Next door, Unit 27 pioneered strength and conditioning on the soi, with stay-and-train weeks (training, room, and three counted meals a day) from about €750 in low season.
For work, HOMA runs coliving with coworking in Phuket Town and Chalong Bay, with monthly coworking around €91 (confirm on enquiry). A one-bed runs €420 to €630 per month and a single person spends around €560 before rent (Numbeo, September 2026, small sample for a whole island).
When to come: December to March is dry season and prime, April is brutally hot, and May and September to October are the monsoon peaks. June to August is wet but quieter and cheaper, and Unit 27's low-season rate saves about €110 a week.
🇹🇭 Chiang Mai: fight camps on a budget
Chiang Mai is where you train seriously without spending seriously. At Hongthong Muay Thai, run since 2013 by twin ex-fighter brothers with 700+ fights between them, a session costs 300 THB (about €8) and a month €157 to €235, with a room-plus-training package around €392 per month. Santai Muay Thai charges about €287 per month and its trainer roster reads like a fight card, active stadium fighters with their own profile pages (prices as published at time of research, confirm before booking). Team Quest covers the MMA and BJJ side from €9 per drop-in.
Yellow Coworking in Nimman is the work base: hot desk €156 per month, day pass €11, with on-site showers advertised specifically so you can arrive straight from training. Living costs are the lowest on this list: one-beds from €250 outside the center and around €477 per month for a single person before rent (Numbeo, September 2026).
When to come: October to December is cool, dry, and clean air. The catch is burning season: February to April, PM2.5 smoke makes outdoor training genuinely unhealthy (March is historically the worst). May to September is rainy but the air is clean and the gyms are quiet.
🇮🇩 Canggu: the wellness campus next to the surf
Canggu compresses more boutique fitness per square kilometer than anywhere in Asia. Nirvana Life in Berawa is less a gym than a wellness village: 100+ classes a week, a 25-meter outdoor pool, 4°C ice baths, infrared sauna, coworking, and a restaurant, so you can go from strength class to breathwork to ice bath to lunch without leaving the compound. A day pass is about €41 including tax, four weeks unlimited about €157 plus tax and service. Bali MMA covers the combat side (day about €15, month €142), and Body Factory starts at about €122 plus tax for four weeks of gym and classes.
BWork is the coworking anchor: €189 per month for 24/7 access, day pass €15. On costs, honesty first: Numbeo only covers Denpasar (one-beds €140 to €330), and Canggu's expat market runs meaningfully higher, so budget above those numbers.
When to come: April to June and September to October are the sweet spots, dry with fewer crowds. July and August are driest but peak crowded, December to February is the wet season, and note the island shuts down completely for Nyepi in March.
🇲🇽 Mexico City: altitude training in a racetrack park
Condesa and Roma pack a serious training scene into a few walkable blocks at 2,240 meters, where your easy runs quietly become altitude training. Parque México, the neighborhood's green heart, was laid out in 1927 on the oval of a horse-racing track, and the streets still curve in an ellipse, so Condesa's runners do their laps on the ghost of a racetrack.
Inpeak runs CrossFit and Hyrox training with English-speaking coaches and 14+ classes a day (drop-in about €25). Adamanta is the climbing chain, €16 for a day pass with free gear on your first visit and €67 per month across all branches. On Parque México itself, MD Condesa teaches BJJ and Muay Thai in the Renzo Gracie lineage from €25 per week.
WeWork hot desks start around €176 per month across 13 locations. One-beds run €620 to €980 and a single person spends about €717 before rent (Numbeo, September 2026, robust sample, though Roma and Condesa sit above the city average).
When to come: November to March is the dry season with sunny, mild days and jacarandas in March. July and August are the wettest months. Summers never really cook at this altitude, but afternoon rain will move your training indoors.
🇨🇴 Medellín: the city that closes its streets so you can train
Medellín's fitness culture is municipal policy. Every Sunday morning the Ciclovía closes 49 kilometers of streets, including Avenida El Poblado, to cars so runners, cyclists, and skaters can take over, and the network peaks at over 160,000 users a month. It is so embedded in city life that when the Medellín Marathon needed the same streets one Sunday this September, the city simply pointed everyone to the river route instead. Add eternal-spring weather at 1,495 meters, a mild altitude bump most people adapt to in days, and the training conditions are hard to beat.
Gym life is dominated by Smart Fit, with five locations in El Poblado alone. The no-commitment Black plan, the nomad option, costs about €41 per month and includes all locations. CrossFit DLX has been an affiliate for 13 years and welcomes drop-ins (price on enquiry).
NOI Coworking in Ciudad del Río runs 400+ desks with 24/7 access, day passes from about €17 (monthly rates on quote). One-beds run €570 to €920 and a single person spends about €730 before rent (Numbeo, September 2026, modest sample and locals note the rent figures skew low).
When to come: there is no bad season, only wetter and drier ones. December to March and June to August are the driest, April to May brings the first rains, and October is the wettest month. Train mornings and you are fine almost year-round.
🇿🇦 Cape Town: the outdoor gym with a mountain attached
Cape Town might be the best city in the world for training outside for free. The Sea Point Promenade has a free outdoor gym on the beachfront, Table Mountain's trail network starts inside the city, and Green Point parkrun runs a free timed 5K every Saturday at 8 am, with a post-run group coffee that doubles as a ready-made social circuit for a just-landed nomad.
Indoors, Bloc 11 is the value king: €7.45 for a climbing day pass including yoga and Pilates classes, about €29 per month on debit order, and Amigo Mondays, where members bring a friend free. CityROCK offers 4,000 m² of climbing plus a full gym for about €13 a day, and Virgin Active covers 130+ clubs nationwide from about €89 per month on an annual plan.
Workshop17 has five locations including the V&A Waterfront, with hot-desk plans from about €116 per month excluding VAT. One-beds run €630 to €900 and a single person spends about €640 before rent (Numbeo, September 2026, solid sample).
When to come: the seasons are flipped for northern-hemisphere readers. March to May and September to November are the calm, dry gold. June to August is winter, cold fronts, rain, and muddy trails. December to February is glorious but hot, peak-priced, and the Cape Doctor southeaster can howl for days.
🇪🇸 Barcelona: free beach gains and a padel obsession
Barcelona's fitness scene starts free: the calisthenics park on Passeig Marítim at Barceloneta beach has pull-up and parallel bars with public showers next to them, and the city maintains free open-access gymnastics circuits across town. From there it scales up. Sharma Climbing in Poblenou was founded by Chris Sharma, one of the most influential climbers ever, and a €15 day pass buys entry to walls built by one of the sport's all-time greats, with yoga and fitness classes bundled into the €58 monthly membership. For Spain's real sports obsession, Pàdel Barcelona-El Prat rents its 14 panoramic courts from €4.50 per person per hour in the mornings.
OneCoWork starts at €165 per month with 24/7 access, and Aticco runs nine locations from €220 plus VAT. Barcelona is the priciest European base on this list: one-beds €1,130 to €1,460 (Numbeo, September 2026, robust sample). Our Barcelona cost of living guide has the full breakdown, including why the frozen rental market works the way it does.
When to come: April to June and September to October, warm but not hot, long days, swimmable sea. July and August are hot, humid, and Barceloneta is saturated with peak tourist crowds. Winters are mild but short-dayed.
🇦🇪 Dubai: the mega-gym capital
Dubai does fitness at a scale nowhere else attempts. Warehouse Gym runs 16 clubs, including a 24-hour flagship in Al Quoz that lists a barber among the gym-floor facilities, next to the juice bar and valet parking. Memberships start around €59 per month on an annual Light plan, with the Premium tier (15 clubs, Olympic pool, sauna) at about €101. The Kite Beach running track opposite the Burj Al Arab is the free outdoor anchor, and every autumn the Dubai Fitness Challenge turns the whole city into a free 30-minutes-a-day-for-30-days event with pop-up fitness villages and a mass run down Sheikh Zayed Road.
Even the coworking is fitness-native: Nook in Jumeirah Lake Towers is a coworking space built for the fitness industry, pitching its offices as "a quick shuffle lunge away from the coffee machine," with an on-site group-exercise studio. Hot desks cost about €23 per day or €234 per month. The catch is cost of living: one-beds run €1,290 to €2,090 (Numbeo, September 2026, robust sample), the highest on this list.
When to come: November to March is superb, 20 to 27°C and endless sun. June to September is a 40°C furnace where outdoor training is a genuine health risk and everything moves indoors. October is transitional, with the Fitness Challenge kicking off at month-end.

🟢 great conditions · 🟡 workable with caveats (heat, rain, or crowds) · 🔴 tough season (monsoon, smoke, winter rain, or extreme heat)
The two-hemisphere logic works here just like with surfing: when Southeast Asia hits monsoon or smoke season, Cape Town and Barcelona are at their best, and vice versa. There is always a green column somewhere.

🏆 Fitness events worth traveling for

| TCS London Marathon | Apr 24–25, 2027 | 🇬🇧 London | First two-day edition, 100,000 runners (ballot closed, charity places remain) |
| HYROX Worlds | Jun 10–13, 2027 | 🇭🇰 Hong Kong | The World Championships, the season finale |
HYROX is the one to understand: 100+ events worldwide this season, an identical race format in every city (8 kilometers of running broken up by sled pushes, wall balls, and farmers carries), and races in three of the hubs on this list. You could train in Barcelona in autumn, race there in November, winter in Cape Town, and race again in March. The CrossFit Open works the other way around: you do not travel to it, it comes to whatever affiliate you are already training at.
For nomad gatherings rather than races, our events guide has the full 2026/27 calendar.
🌏 One last thing
You do not need to live on a fitness street to stay in shape, the habits matter more than the address. But there is something to be said for a city where the default social plan is a parkrun, a Sunday Ciclovía, or a Muay Thai class instead of another bar. Pick one green column from the matrix, book a month, and see what happens to your resting heart rate.
