Visiting Southeast Asia is impossible without renting a scooter or a motorbike. Yes, we feel you. It is so much fun to drive through lush green rice paddies, explore the surrounding area by bike, and it is convenient to get to the coworking space.
When having travel health insurance with Genki, scooter accidents and motorbike accidents are covered. But only for the following conditions.
โ๏ธ Are scooter accidents covered by Genki?
Yes. With our ๐ Genki Traveler, scooter accidents are covered. Genki Traveler covers the medical expenses only for the insured person. Medical expenses for other injured persons are not covered.
โ๏ธ Are material damages covered?
No. We do not cover any material damages, neither of the insured person nor of any other person involved in the accident.
When you rent a scooter or a motorbike check with the rental service if they offer additional insurance that covers material damages.
๐ง What if you caused the accidents?
Our ๐ Genki Traveler covers scooter accidents no matter if the accident is caused by you (the insured person) or not.
We cover medical expenses only for the person who is insured with us.
๐ช What if you didn't wear a helmet?
Yes. Our ๐ Genki Traveler covers scooter accidents no matter if you (the insured person) wore a helmet or not.
However, we strongly recommend to always wear a helmet. Especially in countries like Thailand and Vietnam, where the law doesn't get enforced, it is advisable to wear a helmet for both, the driver and the passenger.
The ratio of motorbike accidents in Thailand is extremely high. Around 74% of all traffic accident deaths are motorbike drivers. Around 80% of all accidents are caused by young men around the age of 25.
Although the WHO recommends an urban speed limit of 50km/h, the urban speed limit in Thailand is 80km/h, alarming for experts.
Add the manual enforcement of traffic laws to control alcohol levels, speed limits, and helmet laws, and you can imagine why Thailand is ranked high in fatality rate for traffic accidents.
The average annual fatality rate for traffic accidents has been around 20,000 people in the past ten years.
๐ป What if you drove drunk?
No. Our ๐ Genki Traveler does not cover the costs of accidents caused by mental illness or impaired consciousness, if this is a result of the consumption of alcohol, drugs, intoxicants or sedatives, sleeping tablets or other narcotic substances.
We strongly advise you not to drive any motorized vehicle after you consumed alcohol.
๐ What if you took drugs?
No. Our ๐ Genki Traveler does not cover the costs of accidents caused by mental illness or impaired consciousness, if this is a result of the consumption of alcohol, drugs, intoxicants or sedatives, sleeping tablets or other narcotic substances.
If you consumed drugs, we strongly advise you to not drive any motorized vehicle.
๐ชช What if you had no license?
No for engines 250cc or bigger. Our ๐ Genki Traveler does not cover scooter accidents when you (the insured person) do not have a driver's or motorbike license.
Yes for engines less than 250cc. You are covered with ๐ Genki Traveler without having a license when driving a scooter less than 250cc.
We strongly advise you not to drive any motorized vehicle if you do not have a license or if you feel uncomfortable driving in a foreign country.
